Youshokuya Kichi Kichi, Kyoto - ザ・洋食屋 キチキチ

Play the video below and yes, I ate that. But right now, I'm going to tell you how to get to eat it too.

Did the video look familiar? I first came across the Omurice on a Facebook video that went viral and Zhiling remembered that it was in Japan. We went to Youtube and found the name of the restaurant! That's when we decided we should go and have a meal there if we could!

As seen in the title, yes, it's in Kyoto! Right in the middle of an alley a short walk away from our ryokan. We took a short walk over after showering when we came back from Inari.

Without any further ado, let me present to you what we ate!

Bread roll with Butter, see if you can catch the Yuzu after-taste! 250JPY
Beef stew, very very tasty. 2800JPY
Croquette, also yummy, but I didn't try it. 1350JPY Credits: KY.
Credits: Ky, very very cramped table.

I posted the video as a throwback! My Omurice is a half-portion at 1350JPY, just right for me (even though after that we went in search of dessert oh well welcome to my fatty life in Japan!).

Here's a picture of the full-sized portion! 2500JPY Credits: KY
I apologise for all the pictures with weird lighting as the lighting in the restaurant was just really bad. :(

All the food were very yummy so many many thumbs up for them! But the waitress (there is only 1) is very curt, so don't expect the usual Japanese 110% hospitality.

I made a reservation approximately 1-2 months in advance and was accepted for a party of 7 for dinner, initially I had intended to head here for lunch as I read online that it would be cheaper but no such luck. My friends were willing to compromise so we went ahead with the timing that was suggested, dinner on 22nd August.

When we arrived we were shown to the table and it was pretty dusty and cramped so we waited for the waitress to hand us the menu. She can speak some English and took our orders. It is mandatory for every one to have one dish, which means we had to order 7 dishes. It's not difficult really, because we were splitting the dishes to share and also there is the option to order a Half-portion of Omurice (which I did).

In my opinion, the portions are small but the food here is pricey, you can find the menu here! There is also only 1 chef, while he can prepare many portions of fried rice (that goes into the Omurice) together, each omelette has to be made one by one. So we waited quite a while for all the food to arrive. Everything else other than the Omurice arrived pretty quickly so I guess they are prepared before hand.

I strongly recommend the Bread Rolls and the Beef Stew! In addition to the Omurice, of course, that's why you are there in the first place!

The whole restaurant seats about 12 people including our table so a reservation is a necessity,  and absolutely non-negotiable, if you are serious enough about having this for dinner, book early like I did! The restaurant does not prohibit smoking within its premises (yes, you read that right) so we were doing nothing but inhaling secondhand smoke for the better part of half an hour waiting for our food to arrive.

You will know when your Omurice is about to arrive because the chef makes a show of cooking it! His showmanship was excellent and very comical if you understand Japanese. We did not, so we were not guffawing unlike his other patrons. Zhiling did catch some bits and pieces which she said was him being witty with his commentary as he was cooking. You are also invited to document his 'little show' of cutting every omelette to fall apart over the bed of rice!

Other than the mildly unpleasant experience with the smoke and lack of space, we all left with happy tummies because our meal was delicious. Do note that prices stated on the menu are before taxes!

The Chef!
